Some of the text in this Vintage Ad:
“Mommie – how many days till I’m well?”
A plaintive, familiar question - asked by every
youngster who’s bouncing back after having had
a bout of illness.
Fortunately, this little patient won’t be in bed as
long as she might have been, because her mother-
a competent home nurse – is perfectly capable of
doing “just what the doctor ordered.”
Sooner or later, there's sickness in every family.
Often it's brief and not too serious. Sometimes it’s
long and complicated. In either case, the patient
will get along better if someone in the family knows
home nursing.
What's more, if a member of the family is sufficiently
well trained in nursing care, the physician who -
might otherwise be inclined to send the patient
to the hospital-may favor home care. Or, if hospital
care is necessary, it may be shortened when
there's someone at home upon whom the doctor
can rely to follow his instructions during "the
getting-well period."
Physicians agree that many sick people feel hap-
ier, more comfortable and secure at home – and
this often hastens recovery. Moreover, hospital car
is expensive and beds are needed for those patients
who require intensive medical and nursing attention.
So, a competent home nurse can often help reduce
the cost of sickness by making hospitalization
unnecessary-or by shortening its duration.
No family should be without a member who is
familiar with home nursing. You can prepare yourself
for this important duty in courses offered by
your local chapter of the American Red Cross. You
can also learn the basic essentials of home nursing
on your own-with the help of Metropolitan's
Home Nursing Handbook.
This easy-to-follow, illustrated guide tells how to
prepare the sickroom, how to handle your patient's
emotional needs, how to give medicines, apply
dressings, prepare meals and assist your doctor in
many other ways.
